RAF v Irish Defence Force
Dublin
26 Feb 10
The RAF travelled to Dublin, ROI making history being the first British Military representative side to take on the Irish Defence Force (IDF) at football. It was a chance for boundaries to be broken and ideal for both teams to prepare for their respective important fixtures; RAF for the Inter-Service challenge and IDF for European military qualification.
The impressive IDF fielded a strong and technically gifted side, many of the players playing for Pro Clubs in the League of Ireland.
Both teams started sprightly and fully committed to the cause. It was clear this meant a lot to both teams, pride at stake and certainly not a game for the faint hearted. Eventually both stood strong and football began to take control over the aggression.
Dogged defending from both sides kept the goal chances to a minimum and it was not until the second half that the deadlock was broken. The impressive IDF No 6 (recently returned from trials with Norwich and Leyton Orient) scored first with an excellent second half free kick. Curling the ball into the net off the post leaving the RAF keeper with no chance.
The RAF re-grouped and a managerial tactical change saw the RAF pick up the pace and pile on the pressure. With 5 mins to go SAC Tweedie (RAF Kinloss) broke free and coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper.
So this historical fixture finished 1 – 1, a fair result overall with both management staff very happy with their respective team performances.
Special thanks must go to the IDF FA for being incredible hosts in particular their organisation and generosity which was second to none. Plans are in place for this fixture to be an established event.
