RAF Shawbury FC Take On The Legendary Neil Baldwin FC

Preparations for the next football season have started early at a North Shropshire Airbase with RAF Shawbury taking on the team made famous by the Academy Award winning film, ‘Marvellous’ on Wednesday 24th May 17 in the 2nd running of this annual event.

The film told the incredible life story of Neil Baldwin and his exceptional life, which included spending many years as a clown and also as the kit man at Stoke City FC. Neil is a very well-known character and an excellent ambassador for Keele University having started his Football Club at the University many years ago.

FS Danny Jackson and the legend himself Neil Baldwin

The film was a huge success, taking the best British Drama at the 2015 British Academy Television Awards. Neil joined his team when they took on the RAF Shawbury team organised by Flight Sergeant Danny Jackson, an Instructor on the School of Air Operations Control.  Danny fielded a stronger RAF Shawbury squad, following a close game in 2016, to best prepare his team for the forthcoming season.

RAF Shawbury FC were 6-0 to the good at half time, and went on to win the match 8-2.  The 2 goals for the Neil Baldwin FC were scored by the legend himself, Neil Baldwin, who dusted off his shiny shoes and in his finest shirt and tie neatly placed 2 penalties, leaving Flt Lt Mike Tierney with no chance.  Goals from Fg Off Hewson (3), Sgt Buckley (3), Cpl Jenkins (1) and a Neil Baldwin FC own goal completed the scoring.

Danny said, ‘As always we are incredibly pleased to have been able to play the fixture against the Neil Baldwin Football Club. Neil is an incredible character with an inspirational life story. We look to continue this excellent link with the club and continue to play this fixture on an annual basis.’
