Shirts Appeal Team Prepare For Christmas In Nepal

A team of Service personnel and civilians are completing final preparations for a Christmas with a difference in Nepal.

The team, representing the RAF Taking Football to Africa and Beyond Charitable Appeal, will  depart the UK on 14th December to complete a 15 day delivery visit in the Himalayan Mountain Range, working with the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The Appeal is operated from RAF Shawbury in North Shropshire through the RAF Football Association and is organised by Wing Commander Neil Hope MBE, with the assistance of Flight Lieutenant (Retired) Tony Kinchley and Flight Sergeant (soon to Warrant Officer) Louise Simpson.  The appeal collects donated football kit and re-distributes them worldwide to children and adults delivering ‘Aid through Football’.  Since its inception in 2006 the Appeal has delivered an incredible 181000 Items including 55000 football shirts to 55 countries worldwide.

The Appeal team usually makes delivery visits to Kenya in East Africa, but has been building links in Nepal through the Ghurkhas.  This will be the first full delivery visit to the Himalayan country with 13 people from the RAF and civilian communities travelling over Christmas.  During the visit the team will make deliveries to schools and clubs in Kathmandu, the capital, and in Pokhara, the home of the Ghurkhas. The team will also complete a trek on the short Annapurna trail and make deliveries in villages along their route.

Neil said, ‘I am really pleased to be heading off on our first major visit to Nepal and we are incredibly proud to be working with the legendary Ghurkhas and the Gurkha Welfare Scheme. We have 13 people travelling including 10 current or retired RAF personnel.  This is especially pleasing as the RAF approaches the celebrations and commemorations of its 100th Anniversary in 2018. Included within the travelling party are a group of 6 from RAF Shawbury and 4 of the others have previously served at the Shropshire unit and the home of the Appeal.’
